Sugarland Transitional

Sugar Land, Texas

A complete renovation took place for this multi-generational and global family home. By re-configuring the space, removing heavy wall fixtures, and brightening up the rooms with light colors and lighting, the transitional style was born. The overall space was inspired and mapped out by Melissa Sharp, who was awarded the 2019 ASID Ruby Award for Emerging Professional in Residential Design for this particular project in partnership with KBC.

The removal of heavy columns and a wall made the kitchen open and accessible to the adjacent rooms, and visible from the front door. To be a modern space, we lightened and brightened the room with new cabinetry, counter tops, appliances, flooring, paint, larger windows, new electrical, and lighting. To stay open, functional, and stylish, two separate islands were added to the room, one for serving large family meals and the other for clean up. Specialty spice storage inserts and pull-outs were specifically created for the design and two double pull outs for trash and recycling were added. Also, stacked cabinetry with glass displays on top took advantage of the 14-foot ceilings.

The old range top and down draft were enclosed in a brick structure. There was absolutely no space to prep or cook. We removed it and centered the new range on the wall with a custom hood, creating a centerpiece in the room to go with the stone backsplash. We added a steam oven, baking station, double ovens, six burners, and a griddle top. Incorporating the bar, we positioned other key appliances and plumbing was moved and added to create multiple workstations and workflows throughout the large space.
